Background of the Study
Natural disasters, including landslides, often result in mass casualties and complex recovery operations. In Ebonyi Local Government Area, forensic anthropology plays a pivotal role in victim identification amid the chaos of disaster scenes. The application of osteological analysis, DNA profiling, and contextual evidence is essential to re-establish identities and provide closure for affected families (Nnamdi, 2023). However, natural disasters complicate traditional forensic procedures due to rapid decomposition and environmental disruptions (Chukwuemeka, 2024). This study investigates how forensic anthropology adapts to the challenges presented by landslide disasters, emphasizing the integration of multidisciplinary techniques to enhance identification accuracy. The research critically evaluates current practices, highlighting successes and deficiencies, and proposes methodological enhancements to improve disaster response and forensic outcomes. The local context, with its unique geological and climatic conditions, underscores the need for specialized approaches tailored to Ebonyi’s disaster-prone environment (Ifeanyi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
In the wake of landslide disasters in Ebonyi, forensic teams face significant challenges in identifying victims due to rapid skeletal degradation and environmental interference. Current methods often yield inconclusive results, delaying the identification process and causing distress to affected communities (Eze, 2023). Limited resources and a lack of region-specific protocols further hinder effective forensic analysis.
